"Thermal Response Test examines the key parameters of soil and forecasts the future behavior of the system. It allows the engineer to optimize the geothermal system and to examine its behavior at any time"

Theory

Thermal Response Test can be executed during the design of the geothermal system or during its operation, in case a malfunction occurs. The test predicts the ground properties, where ground heat exchanger is buried. As a result we can predict the ground heat exchanger properties and its influence to the whole system. Specifically, we can calculate some basic parameters of the system, through thermal response test, such as thermal conductivity of the underground, the undisturbed temperature of the ground, the thermal borehole resistance and the presence of groundwater, and its influence at the whole system. Test results are shown graphically for better understanding and study. The designer edits the results and makes the appropriate interventions that will lead the system to smooth and efficient operation. In particular, the evaluation of the long-term behaviour of the soil and the system, leads to proper sizing of vertical ground heat exchanger. An undersized system has low efficiency and high operating costs and sometimes there is the possibility of failure. On the other hand, an oversized system leads to a high investment. Thermal Response Test gives the designer the opportunity to adjust the parameters of the system (working fluid, borehole grouting, operation temperature and pressure, diameter and arrangement of the pipes, diameter of the borehole) in order to increase the heat transfer from and to the ground. Besides the factor of proper sizing of geothermal system, thermal response test can be used to detect the occurrence of groundwater, any point of failure or crack of the vertical ground heat exchanger and to make the essential repairing.
